작가의 시야에서 바라보는 세상은 파동과 흐름의 세상이다. 세계는 계속해서 진동하고 움직인다. 이 움직임은 의도치 않은 우연의 산물이다. 작가는 이러한 세계를 형성하는 추동력, 즉 응축되고 폭발하며 잔류하는 기세를 그려내고자 한다. ‘힘’, ‘기세’를 떠올려보자면 땅과 수면을 울리고 찢는 파동, 어떠한 전개를 갖고 흐르는 기류, 그리고 주변을 흡수하거나 반발하는 전자기장과 같은 것들이라 할 수 있다. 작가는 이를 휘몰아치는 자연의 이미지로 형상화하여 동판 특유의 섬세하면서도 거세게 흐르는 무수한 선들로 표현한다. 거칠게 나아가는 형세, 그 모양에 영향을 주는 어떠한 힘에 집중하며, 마침내 폭풍전야와 같이 고조되는 긴장과 고요함의 순간에 닿고자 한다. 그 결과 거칠고 첨예한 선이 전류처럼 가로지르며, 휘몰아치는 폭풍의 거센 기류와 잔류가 고이고 흐르는 어떤 세계와 마주하게 된다.

From the artist's perspective, the world is one of waves and flows. The world continuously vibrates and moves, and this movement is the product of unintended chance. The artist aims to depict the driving forces that shape this world—forces that condense, explode, and linger. When we think of 'force' and 'momentum,' we can imagine waves that resonate and tear through the ground and water surface, air currents that flow with a certain trajectory, and electromagnetic fields that absorb or repel their surroundings. The artist embodies these elements as images of swirling nature, expressed through the countless delicate yet forceful lines characteristic of copperplate engraving. Focusing on the rough progression and the forces that shape it, the artist seeks to capture the heightened tension and calm of a moment akin to the eye of the storm. As a result, the coarse and sharp lines intersect like electric currents, presenting a world where the violent currents and residual turbulence of a storm converge and flow.

Q : 이번 출품작에 대한 간략한 설명을 적어주세요.

A :

올해는 2023년부터 이어져온 ‘휘 파람’ 주제의 작업을 이어오고 있다. 휘파람, 나비의 날갯짓과 같은 한 줄기의 바람, 작은 파장이 공명을 통해 머나먼 물결이 되어가는 여정을 그린다. 타원을 그리며 타고 올라온 바람은 소용돌이를 태동시킨다. 그 소용돌이라는 구멍으로부터 생성되고 펼쳐나가며 점멸하는 힘의 전개를 표현한다. <Tempesta>는 이를 태풍의 전개에 빗대 표현한 초기 작업이다. '휘 파람'의 메인 시리즈인 천 설치 작업을 통해서는 액자 없이 펼쳐진 매체 위로 이미지가 파도처럼 확장하고 흘러가기를 염원했다.

This year, I continue my work on the theme of "Whistling," which began in 2023. I depict the journey of a single gust of wind, like a whistle or the flap of a butterfly's wings, becoming a distant wave through resonance. The wind that spirals upward in an ellipse initiates a vortex. I express the unfolding power generated and expanded from the hole of that vortex. is an early work that likens this to the development of a typhoon. Through the main series of "Whistling," which involves fabric installations, I aspire for the images to expand and flow like waves across the medium, unconfined by frames.

Q : 작가님의 작업에서 판화가 갖는 의미는 무엇인가요?

A :

나는 부분에서부터 시작해 무계획적으로 이미지를 전개시켜 간다. 그리고 그러한 이미지를 전개시키는 주요한 단초가 시야로 들이닥치는 우연적 형상들이다. 이 우연성이 판화의 우연성과 만날 때 더욱 시너지를 낸다. 판화를 찍기까지 드로잉-제판-프린팅 등 최소 3번의 과정 동안 이미지는 계속 변화하며, 판화의 우연적 흔적들이 이미지가 전개될 길 자국이 된다.

I start from a part and develop the image unplanned. The primary catalysts for this image development are the chance shapes that enter my field of vision. This randomness creates even more synergy when it meets the serendipity of printmaking. Throughout the minimum three-step process of drawing, plate-making, and printing, the image continually evolves, and the accidental traces of printmaking become the pathways for the image to unfold.

Q : 앞으로 시도하고자 하는 작업의 방향은 무엇인가요?

A :

나는 사각의 경계를 중심으로 프레임 내에 충실하며 밀도 있는 세계를 구축함과 동시에 프레임 너머로 뻗어가는 세계를 구성하기 위해 고민해왔다. 이를 위해 접고 덧붙일 수 있는 한지와 천이라는 매체를 활용했으며 올해는 특히 판화로 입체 조형을 구성하기 위한 실험을 하는 중이다. 이처럼 디테일하고 압축적인 이미지의 종이 판화와 대형 설치 작업의 투트랙으로 갈 것이다.

I have been contemplating how to build a dense and faithful world within the confines of a rectangular frame, while simultaneously constructing a world that extends beyond the frame. To achieve this, I have utilized materials like hanji (traditional Korean paper) and fabric, which can be folded and added onto. This year, I am particularly experimenting with creating three-dimensional sculptures through printmaking. Thus, my work will progress on two tracks: detailed and compact paper prints, and large-scale installation projects.
