나는 현재 폭력적일 정도로 아름답고, 운명적인, 그림같은 사랑을 추구하는 사회적 판타지를 분홍색 이미지로 풀어내는 작업을 하고 있다. 이 세상을 직시하고, 외면하지 않고 반응하는 것에 집중하고 있다. 2023년 부터 시작된 Addiction 연작에서 전통 단청 기법과 재료를 이용해 끊임 없이 반복되는 이미지를 만들며 사랑의 환상에 대해 이야기하며, 자로 잰듯 번듯하게 펼쳐지는 사랑은 누군가에겐 그저 완벽하게 설계된 꿈이며 판타지에 불과하다고 말한다.

I am currently working on expressing the socially constructed fantasy of violent yet beautiful, fateful, and picturesque love through pink images. My focus is on confronting this world, not ignoring it, and responding to it. In the Addiction series, which began in 2023, I use traditional dancheong techniques and materials to create endlessly repeating images, discussing the illusion of love. I convey that meticulously measured and perfectly unfolded love is, for some, nothing more than a perfectly designed dream and fantasy.

Q : 이번 출품작에 대한 간략한 설명을 적어주세요.

A :

내가 사용하는 전통 단청기법에는 일종의 스텐실 기법이 들어가는데, 종이에 구멍을 뚫고 호분가루 주머니로 쳐서 전사하는 방식이다. 여러개의 같은 부재에 같은 도안을 전사하다보니 나온 방식인데, 판화를 전공한 나에게는 무척 익숙한 효과였다. 단청은 수없이 반복되지만 결국엔 모두 하나하나 손을 거쳐야 하기 때문에 모두 다른 모양이다. 똑같은 것을 반복해 전사한 것이 결국 다 다른 모양으로 완성된다는 점 또한 흥미롭다.

The traditional dancheong technique I use includes a form of stenciling, where holes are punched into paper and then transferred using a pouch of white powder. This method emerged from the need to transfer the same pattern onto multiple identical components, an effect that is very familiar to me as a printmaking major. Although dancheong involves endless repetition, each piece ultimately requires individual handwork, resulting in unique variations. The fact that what is repeatedly transferred eventually manifests in entirely different forms is also fascinating to me.

Q : 작가님의 작업에서 판화가 갖는 의미는 무엇인가요?

A :

판화는 나에게 시작이었다. 판화로 작품을 시작했기 때문에 어떤 매체를 다루더라도 나는 판화의 뇌로 생각하는 편이다. 완성된 모습을 머릿속에 그리고 단계를 먼저 계획한다. 매사에 적당한 임기응변으로 세상을 살아내는 사람이지만 이때 만큼은 굉장히 계획적이다. 판화는 또한 움직임이기도 하다. 계획은 움직임으로서 완성되고, 눈과 손이 바쁜 그 과정에서 머리는 이따금 휴식을 취한다. 판화와 단청 둘 모두에서 발견한 가장 큰 특징이며, 내가 가장 좋아하는 부분이다.

Printmaking was my beginning. Since I started my artistic journey with printmaking, I tend to think with a printmaker's mindset, regardless of the medium I handle. I visualize the finished image in my mind and plan the steps first. Although I navigate the world with a fair amount of improvisation, I am very meticulous when it comes to this. Printmaking is also about movement. Plans come to fruition through action, and during the busy process of engaging both eyes and hands, my mind occasionally finds rest. This is the most significant feature I've discovered in both printmaking and dancheong, and it is the part I love the most.

Q : 앞으로 시도하고자 하는 작업의 방향은 무엇인가요?

A :

꾸준히 전통단청 기법과 재료를 이용한 작품제작에 열중할 생각이다. 단청기법으로 만든 문양을 동판화 기법으로 제작해보니 의외로 묵직한 동판과 키치한 문양이 잘 어울려, 몇 번 더 시도해볼 생각이다. 9월에 개인전이 있다. 개인전에서는 사랑에 대한 이야기를 조금 더 좁게, 날카롭게 다듬어 더 구체적으로 글을 써야겠다.

I plan to continue focusing on creating works using traditional dancheong techniques and materials. When I tried producing patterns made with dancheong techniques using copperplate printmaking, I found that the heavy copper plates surprisingly complemented the kitschy patterns well. I intend to experiment with this combination a few more times. I have a solo exhibition in September. For the exhibition, I will narrow down and sharpen the narrative about love, writing more concretely on the topic.I plan to continue focusing on creating works using traditional dancheong techniques and materials.
